Who buys this grade

Road-salt importers and terminal operators, municipal and highway-authority contractors, winter-service companies, retail winter ranges (25 kg bags), airport and port operators.

Specification

  • Typical NaCl 98.7–99.4 % as received (laboratory reports 2016, 2026); contract minimum 98.5 % dry basis.
  • Gradation: about 79 % between 2 and 8 mm, 17 % under 2 mm and 3.5 % over 8 mm (2016 sieve analysis, ASTM E726). Screening to a customer envelope is available at the washing plant, subject to capacity.
  • Anti-caking (sodium ferrocyanide, 50–100 mg/kg) on request; samples to date contain none.
  • Reference specifications: EN 16811-1 (Europe), ASTM D632 Type I (North America), and importer sheets such as NaCl ≥99.0 %, SO₄ <0.5 %, insolubles ≤0.15 %, H₂O <4 %.
Coarse solar salt dissolves more slowly than rock salt, so it stays on the road longer; Nordic terminals sell exactly this product for temperatures down to about −6 °C and switch to calcium chloride below that.

Typical analysis and contract targets

Typical values from laboratory reports on washed salt (2016, 2026); targets are agreed per lot and confirmed by load-port inspection.

Questions buyers ask about de-icing salt

Is Libyan sea salt suitable for road de-icing in northern Europe?

Yes. Norway's road-salt importers describe Mediterranean sea salt as the most-used road salt in the country, delivered in bulk vessels from Spain, Tunisia, Italy and Egypt. Libyan solar salt is the same product family; the Ras Ajdir works sits on the same gulf as the Tunisian works.

Can you deliver a full winter tender volume?

Export volume is confirmed per season from the stockpile at the works and stated only as documented availability. For 2026/27 we quote parcels from 3,000 t and discuss larger allocations case by case rather than promising capacity we cannot show.

Do you add anti-caking agent?

On request. European road salt typically carries 50–100 mg/kg of sodium ferrocyanide (YPS). Treatment capability is confirmed before contract; untreated salt is the default.

Which Incoterms do you quote?

FOB Tripoli or Zuwara as standard. CFR or CIF to the discharge port on request, with the vessel chartered on the buyer's laycan.
